Honoring Our Veterans Today

               THIS IS OUR VETERAN!!

HE PROUDLY SERVED HIS COUNTRY FOR     OUR FREEDOMS AND YOURS IN VIETNAM

You know today is Veteran's Day.  Perhaps you watched a ceremony or a parade on the television.  Maybe you attended one of the local events.  Perhaps you took advantage of Veteran's Day sales.

We went to Oxnard, a bit south of where we live.  There is a plaza in the middle of one street, with a little park surrounding it.  The war memorial is the focal part of that plaza.  Five obelisks grace the square.  They have written on their faces the names of fallen heroes from WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam and Iraq/Afghanistan.  I took a few pictures while we were there and put them in a slide show for you all to see.  Click on Veteran's to go there.

Today I am thankful for the veterans who have served our country over the years.  Their names are inscribed on memorials, those who are still with us participate in Veteran's Day activities and we are so thankful to them.  About four of the veterans we saw in the plaza today came in wheel chairs, with walkers and canes, proudly wearing caps that proclaimed their service.

There is another veteran in our family as well:  my son Robert served in 1991 in Kuwait during Desert Storm.  He was apart of a special forces group there and other places.  We are so proud of him.

I would love to hear how you spent this day and also what you are thankful for this week.  I'll post your thoughts tomorrow.

  Until then . . . I am.............................

Beautiful entry Penny.  And the slide show was great.  Funny though, as I look at the Vietnam Vets, I realize just how middle-aged we all are.  And still today, there are songs that take me back so many years to goodbye's and prayers for safe return.

Thank you Penny- Rob and to your son too- for serving selflessly, so we could all live in freedom and peace.  The rest of the world is blessed so much by families like yours and those who have and are serving this Great Country!  Thank you for having the courage to let your son do what he thought was best for him and us.  I spent a lot of the day thinking about my Grampa (Canadian Army in WW2), about my father in law, US Navy, Pacific WW2, and the few Vietnam Vets I know.  Also thought of Bill (WFNBear and Samsays) Sam who are both vets.  I am so blessed to know all of you and them!
Today (Sunday) I am grateful- as we (Hubby, son and I) went fishing- a rare time together all day, day was beautiful, water calm- lots of fish (No dinner though).  We had a portable radio, and that song by Alan Jackson came on, "Where were you when the world stopped turning... That September morn..."  It made me cry- to know that there are men and women fighting their butts off over there right now- while we were able to enjoy a peaceful day outdoors- because of them.  And you.  Thank God for soldiers!!!  Blessings to you all! Love Carolyn
