Sunny Morning

I love this graphic. It helps me to remember some things. The last movie I saw in a theater was The Chronicles of Narnia. I know . . . it's been a while. The lions in the graphic remind me a little of Narnia. The movie came from a series of books that I've read more than once. The words in those books come from the mind of a man I respect immensely - C.S. Lewis. At home recently, we watched A Wrinkle in Time. That movie also came from a book my son was reading many years ago. I read the book as well, more than once. Madeline L'Engle has a wonderful imagination.

Of the movies that have come out in the last 20 years (maybe 30),I have read and re-read many of those books. Most of the time, I think the book is better. There is something about sitting down with a book and finding a character I like or identify with. I begin to see the characters in my mind, the places they live and work and their adventures.

I never watch the Oscars. I haven't seen the movies unless we have purchased the DVD. So many times over the years, I have seen a movie made from a book I read and been disappointed. Often, the script gets so far from the book that it becomes unrecognizable. I read some books, the Left Behind Series. When the movie came out on DVD, I don't think it came out to the big screen, I was truly disappointed. A relationship that was only in the;minds of the couple suddenly turned to a real affair. So sad. The books were written to Christians for the most part. Affairs didn't happen there, but Hollywood had to distort it so others would buy and watch.

Our kids today are trained to watch television and movies that they get bored reading a book. They want instant gratification. My family are all readers. My older children are readers. John became a reader a couple of months after he turned two. Okay, he's very smart and talented.I didn't learn to read until I was 3 1/2 and Heather was about 4. You get the picture. We read.

My younger daughter is struggling to read. She doesn't remember what she has read. She writes her own stories, mainly with the same theme. She loves the spell check on the computer. It was frustrating for me to home school her. I needed help. Why? I came from a family of readers and could not comprehend a child who couldn't learn. After I found out that she had learning disabilities, I was okay with it. She goes to regular school now, with a group of kids who are also learning at her level. She wants badly to learn and to comprehend. I believe that desire will overcome many of her problems.

I got off the subject. Do you read more than watch movies? Do you read a book and wait to see the movie so you can see if they got it right?

When all went wrong in my life and I began to lose my personal things, I had this thought, "they" can take it all, but "they" will never be able to take from me what came from a book. The same thing applies to today. The knowledge and imagination that comes from between the pages of a book is ours forever. Isn't that cool?

We are readers as well. I'd much rather read then watch TV. Luckily, that love of books has been passed on to my son. I tried to instill it, and his school has encouraged it all along. He's alway's reading some book. Right now he's also reading a book by C.S. Lewis. I can't recall which one.  He's already read Narnia. He loved it.  He's read all kinds of books. I am so happy he has this love of reading.
Like you, I haven't seen many of the movies that are featured in the Oscars.  Maybe next year.
Hope you have a good weekend.

I read. I don't watch television at all. I don't even know how to use it. I rarely see a movie any more, although I do miss them. But reading, yes. I started reading at age 3 and haven't stopped yet. My daughter is a reader, too, when she has time. I taught her that books are magic.

You are never alone whilst you have a book.  A teacher at school allowed me to fall in love with literature and I adore books, mostly non fiction I have to admit as I love learning but I do agree that books are often far superior to the films they make of them.  You can make the characters look any way that you wish them to look and also the settings and you get to know them the way the author wished you to.  Some Hollywood adaptations have been good but on the whole they take too many liberties with the written work.

I am a reader...3 of the 4 adults I live with are readers.  My mom and grandmother instilled the love of reading in me.  My 3 children are readers and my grandchildren are both readers (in fact, I got a copy of "Rough Guide to the Universe" for them and then forgot to take it to them this morning)

It's hard to be different and to have a learning disability.  I'm glad you got help so your daughter can work in a group of her peers...that's important.

btw, I was directed here by your son (I think he posted something for your birthday in his blog) and I am very grateful as your posts really brighten my day.

hugs,

My mother loved to read... I watched her and she read to me.. by age 3 I was reading on my own. I can't imagine a world without books, although I do find myself reading more on the internet these days which does encroach on the time I have to read books.... I'm often disappointed in a movie made from a book I love, but sometimes there are pleasant surprises!

I am glad that your daughter has a group of peers. Sometimes when you have a difficult time with something it is nice to know that you are not alone!

I absolutely -love- that graphic with the lions.. where did you get it? The man who did the original print of that is a favorite of mine.

I most definately am a reader. I get so into my books I sometimes forget they aren't real. One series has the same character in it , there hasn't been a new book out for a while, because the author has changed her style of reading. Anyway I was driving down the road and thought I wonder how so and so is doing then it dawned on me duh she is a character in a book.

I have to admit, every single time I have ever read a book before I watched the movie I have been disappointed by the movie.  Your graphic puts me in mind of the song "The Lion Sleeps Tonight".  -  Barbara

Hi Penny- I love to read!!!  I love the Chrinicles of Narnia- only just read the series last year for the very first time, and can't wait until my son can understand it a little more and I'll read it to him!  I read to him all the time (He's 6  and doesn't really try to read yet.  I think he likes it when I read- which I love to do!  He's learned all the letter sounds and can read small 3 or 4 letter words, but doesn't like to be pushed.  He'll learn when he's ready, I figure.)  As long as he hears me read to him, sees me read for pleasure, he'll understand that it's fun to read.  We actually have family read nights too- when my husband is feeling OK and not too tired, we all climb in our bed (This is at night time near my boy's bed time)  And I will read from chapter books.  So far we've gone through Wind in the Willows, Treasure Island, Gulliver's Travels (He loved that one, and Swiss Family Robinson.)  Right now we've started Moby Dick- then it will be Rip Van Winkle.  I will try (tried once already- but wasn't interested yet)  Pilgrim's Promise (I loved it!!)  the version for kids- and of course Narnia.  We have the BBC production which isn't half bad, and my Husband really liked it.   I love reading a little of everything- but lately most are Biographies- End of the Spear, The Hiding Place, Heavenly Man Etc.  I'd take books over movies any day, but it is fun to see stuff acted out too- but I agree- way better to read the book and use your own imagination!!!  Great topic, and sorry I was so long!  God Bless Penny!  Hope all is well~  Love Carolyn :)

I always prefer to read the book before I see the movie. For me, it's wanting to envision the setting, character, and plot for myself. I enjoy watching how the screen playwright, director or the actors attempt to flesh out the print. Most of the time, my imagination wins ... movies often leave me disappointed only if I try to compare the book with the movie. But if I consider each by its own merit, I am not as disappointed. It's late, so I can't remember the one movie I saw that seemed to follow the book quite well... if I remember it, I will come back and let you know. I thought the director of the movie "The Abyss" by John Cameron, did a splendid job following the book until I discovered that the book was written as the movie was being made, and communications were ongoing between the author and the director. But that doesn't count!  I loved Narnia. I recently read the first two books in the Narnia chronicles, and A WRinkle in Time. I am a CS Lewis fan as well. Have you watched the movie "Shadowlands" starring Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger? It's a great story about Mr. Lewis and his wife Joy, who died of cancer five years after they were married. A beautiful love story. bea

Oh I did love that Chronicles of Narnia set.  I bought them for Nick but I don't think he has finished them all.  Beautiful graphic.  Yes my kids need more reading and less tv these days.  Hugs,
Lisa

Hello Penny,

I must admit that once I`ve read a book I`m almost always disappointed by the film. It must be that the detail that`s in the book can`t be transferred to the screen that easily. I like films but give me a good book any day. :o)

Have a great week...hugs,

I would rather read than go to the movies or watch TV. I get dissapointed when movies seem to "cut" the important parts. I have yet to see a movie that is as exciting as the book.
Love the lion graphics. That is cool.
Hugs.

I just want to (HUG) you for this entry!!! Wonderfully put!! I would rather read a book any day other than watch tv. or see a movie. I remember so many times , where I have read the book beforehand and then seen the movie. I always walk away thinking the movie was all wrong. I had already made up my mind in my head what the characters where suppose to look like in the book, how they reacted etc. So in all honestly I rarely see a movie based on a book I've read. I love Stephen King's books. I haven't seen a movie of his yet that does them justice. I tend to like to be scared before falling asleep at night (regarding my reading material). I believe we retain our intelligence through reading. Perhaps that is what is wrong with todays generation. (They rarely do.) Love Ya Indigo

I enjoy reading very much, but what I really love is a fabulous, dramatic and larger than life image on a movie screen.  I went today, in fact!  We saw The Astronaut Farmer and it was FABULOUS!

Narnia is one of my favorites also.  I enjoyed the animated version as a child, and fell in love with Aslan!  Such a figure of peace and hope!

Hugs and blessings,

Michelle

You sound like a well rounded person with that last thought.  How is your little doggie Kessa doing?  Hopefully you are making each other very happy.  Take care and have a nice week.
